We think we need a revelation, but we just need reminders.
Revelations are the big events that change the course of our lives. We hope for a revelation because it’s unmistakable and instantaneous. It’s a bucket of water drenching us all at once.
Reminders are the small, daily actions that we choose to make. They tap into what we already know but keep forgetting. They’re raindrops that accumulate over time.
Our culture craves revelations. Meditation retreats, psychedelic retreats, Tony Robbins seminars. Hit me with that big bucket of water so I can feel all the change at once.
To be fair, I love experiencing a revelation, and I would love to have more of them.
But as much as I can try to create the conditions for a revelation to occur, it’s not in my control. I do, however, have control over the reminders in my life.
A reminder is something that turns my attention towards the person I want to be and the life I want to live.
I write out my core values every day, followed by one thing I’m grateful for. On its own, it’s insignificant. But repeated daily, it shifts my perspective and pulls me back to who I want to be.
We’re waiting for a revelation when all we need are the reminders of who we want to be and how we want to live. Start with one.
