What season are you in?

Productive?
Energized?
Burnt out?
Bored?

We move through life in cycles of seasons - we call them moods or feelings or energy levels or something else.

I refer to them as seasons because they come and they go. Not necessarily in a consistent sequence like we find in nature, but similar seasons tend to return for each of us. When they show up they tend to last for a while - weeks or maybe a month - and then the season changes and we’re into a new phase.

There are two recurring seasons I have grown aware of in myself - action and contemplation. When I’m in a season of action I’m productive and can complete more tasks than usual. My capacity to take on more projects increases and it doesn’t feel overwhelming.

There is also a season of contemplation where I’m more likely to sit and read than tear into a to-do list. In this season, I have more energy for longer conversations and time for reflection. My outlook broadens and I think in terms of years or months rather than days.

It’s been helpful to identify these seasons and recognize when I’m moving into them. Work, tasks and projects have to be done regardless of the season I’m in. But managing my expectations and setting priorities to align with the current season makes life a lot more enjoyable.
