My favourite decision making framework comes from Derek Sivers.
The simple concept is this: when you're making a decision about committing to doing something and you feel anything less than "Amazing! Hell yeah I want to do that" the decision should be a "No".
Sivers first introduced the concept in a paragraph in his book Anything You Want & then expanded on the idea in its own book aptly titled Hell Yeah or No. (I highly recommend both books)
It's easy to say yes to everything. It's hard to live with the consequences of every yes.
We think that saying yes to as much as possible will bring us:
- More opportunities
- More respect
- More money
In reality, saying yes to more just means we're creating opportunities to become distracted from our current goals. By saying no we have more time in our schedule and space in our mind to dedicate to the things in our life where we can actually make a difference.
We have the limited capacity to focus deeply on only a few things that really matter. Living by the 'hell yeah or no' mantra will help you stay focused on those few things and avoid all the stuff in life that is working to distract you from them.
